Learn a language while you browse
Otto's browser extension turns the websites you already read into language practice. It swaps a share of the words on the page into the language you are learning, at your level, and adds more as you improve.
What it does on every page
Weaves the page at your level
From a few everyday words to most of the page. The rest stays in your language, so you never lose the thread.
Tap to understand
Tap a swapped word to see what it means and hear how it sounds. If you've met it before, Otto asks you to remember it first.
Save words as you read
One tap saves a word to your word bank, the same one the Otto app uses on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Practise what you met
Your saved words come back in quick games, so the vocabulary from your reading actually sticks.
Why reading works
Research on language learning keeps finding the same thing: we learn best from material that is only a little beyond what we already know. Otto keeps every page at that point, starting with the most common words because a few hundred of them make up most of what anyone reads.
Questions
Which languages does the extension teach?
Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi and Arabic, from English, and English from each of those languages.
Is the Otto extension free?
Yes. Everything Otto does is free, with a daily limit. Otto Pro (£3.99 a month) and Otto Max (£9.99 a month) let you read more each day.
Does it work on every website?
It works on the pages you read: news, blogs, Wikipedia, forums and more. Otto weaves the text on screen first, then more as you scroll.
Do I need the Otto app?
No. The extension works on its own with a free Otto account. If you also use the app, your saved words and your plan are the same on both.
Is there a Safari version?
Yes. Otto works in Safari through the Otto app on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
