Research

The AI behind Otto

Otto rests on three hard problems in language AI. None of them is solved by translating whole sentences, so this is where our research goes.

Advanced Partial Translation

Learner-adaptive, mixed-language text

Translating part of a sentence is harder than translating all of it. Each swapped word has to agree with the words around it, keep its meaning in context, and match what this reader is ready to learn, so the sentence still reads naturally.

AI lip synchronisation for video

When a word in a video changes language, the speaker's lips should change with it. We are researching lip-sync that re-renders only the mouth, for only the swapped word, so learners can watch as well as listen.

How it works

Read what you can. Learn what you can't.

You read what you'd read anyway. Otto swaps in words from the language you're learning, as many as your level allows, and adds more as you improve.

  1. Pick a language and a level

Choose the language you want to learn, then your level: a few everyday words, or most of the page.

  2. Read as you normally would

Read a book in the app, listen to a podcast, or open any website in your browser. Otto changes some of the words into your new language. The rest stays in your own language, so you still follow everything.

  3. Tap any word you don't know

You see what it means and hear how it sounds. If you've seen the word before, Otto asks you to remember it first, because trying to remember helps it stick. Save any word with one tap.

  4. Practise and move up

Your saved words go to Learn, where short games help you practise them. As you learn more words, Otto shows you more, so you keep moving up.

Why it works

Built on how languages are actually learned

Input you can actually understand

Research shows we learn a language best from things that are only a little harder than what we already know. Otto keeps your reading at that point: enough new words to learn from, and enough of your own language to follow what's happening.

Vocabulary in context, by frequency

Otto starts with the most common words, because a few hundred of them make up most everyday text. As your level rises, less common words appear. Each new word comes inside a sentence you understand, which makes it easier to remember, and when you save a word, its sentence is saved with it.

Retrieval, not re-reading

Research also shows that testing yourself works better than reading something again. So when you tap a word you've seen before, Otto hides the answer until you've tried to remember it. Games and quizzes use your own saved words, from the app or the web, and your tutor can test you on what you read.

In the app

What that looks like in practice

A news site open in Otto's browser, with words of the language you are learning woven into the English text
A real web page in Otto's browser. The green words are in the language you're learning, and your level decides how many there are.
The word sheet: the word, its meaning, read aloud, and whether it has been met before
Tap a green word to see what it means, hear it, and check whether you've seen it before. Save it, or practise it straight away.
The Learn page, with saved words sorted into mastered, learning and needs attention
Everything you save goes to Learn, sorted into mastered, still learning and needs practice, with games made from your own words.

Tutors & Schools

Nothing to prepare. Everything to teach with.

Students learn the most between lessons. Otto gives them something worth reading every day, and you decide what they read, what they're tested on, and what you see.

For schools and tutors Free for a year at your school

Every student, as many as you like, with no contract. Use it in all your classes for a full school year, then decide.

What you can do

The most complete toolkit in language teaching

co_present

Words from your lessons

In a Teams, Meet or Zoom lesson, Otto can listen, with everyone's consent, and note the new words, corrections and homework you mention. They go to your student's word bank afterwards.

newspaper

Timed reading assessments

Set a timed read. Your student picks a page, reads it in Otto while the clock runs, then writes a summary. You see the page, the summary, the words they looked up and how long they took.

article

Assign real reading

Set chapters from Otto's library of classic books, or any web page. Students read at their own level, and you see how far they got and which words they looked up.

spellcheck

Vocab tests from their own words

Practice built from the words each student actually looked up in your work, not a general list. It repeats until they get every word right.

menu_book

Coursebook work too

Name the book, the page and the exercises, and Otto keeps track. Students answer in the app or tick the work off to bring to class. Books you've used before are suggested for your next student.

groups

Groups, not just individuals

Give the same work to a whole class at once, and still see each student's result. Add or remove students whenever your groups change.

rate_review

Marking with context

Scores for each part, written answers you mark yourself, comments back to the student, and the words they looked up while working, so you know what was hard before the lesson.

tune

Level and language per student

A student can use the app in Spanish and still learn French with you. You choose the level and the language of the work you set.

chat_bubble

Messages built in

Message each student directly, and get a notification the moment work is handed in. No more chasing homework across different apps.

About Otto

Language learning, woven into everyday life.

Otto is a UK AI start-up building the most complete way to learn a language. Otto turns the reading and listening people already do into learning moments pitched at their exact level.

Our mission

Make every page a step towards fluency

Most people who start a language give up, because study time has to compete with everything else in their day. Otto removes that choice. The articles, books, websites and podcasts people enjoy become their practice, so progress happens every day without setting time aside.

  • 11languages to learn
  • 5complete grammar courses, 102 topics each
  • 5platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Chrome and Safari
The product

One platform for the whole journey

public

Any website, at your level

Our weaving engine swaps in words from the language you're learning, chosen by how common they are and how much you already know. It works on any website, in the Otto app's browser and in Chrome and Safari.

auto_stories

Books and podcasts

A library of classic books, and podcasts in which Otto changes some of the words you hear into your new language with AI voices. Both adapt to your level as you read and listen.

school

Grammar and practice

Complete grammar courses in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese, 102 topics each, with games and quizzes built from each learner's own saved words.

groups

Tutors and schools

A tutor portal and in-app tools to set reading, run timed assessments and follow each student's progress, so learning carries on between lessons.

auto_awesome

AI where it counts

We use AI to adapt and translate content, to voice podcasts, and to recognise speech when learners practise saying words aloud. Every feature is built to make learning more personal.

science

Grounded in research

Otto is built on three well-established findings: we learn from input only slightly harder than what we know, the most common words matter most, and testing ourselves beats re-reading.

Why now

Built for the hours people already spend reading

Hundreds of millions of people are learning a language, yet almost every product competes for the same few minutes of study a day. Otto doesn't. It works inside the hours people already spend reading, browsing and listening, which makes it a daily habit rather than a chore.

From individual learners to tutors, schools and organisations, Otto grows with every reader, book, podcast and language we add.
